Ferns is practical, he is not afraid of making a ruling, but there is something sweet about him that even if he is mad, it does not sting. He is practical and now, after 14 yers or so of Judging, he seems to like the procedural details when he previously overlooked technical errors

[The Underdog]

Judge Ferns goes out of his way to let you explain your case, and if you are a plaintiff will bend over backwards to permit you to amend if needed.

I have never seen him sanction anyone and he is very practical. That is probably his criminal law background.

He does seem to want to be known as a "nice guy". I really like him and he is very smart, even if low key.
